Yes, everyone is entitled to free legal representation at a police station if they are arrested or attending a voluntary interview under caution. This is funded by Legal Aid and is not means-tested.
After requesting legal counsel, the police are generally prohibited from questioning you until you’ve received it. We strongly advise you never to agree to be interviewed under caution without legal representation at the police station.
The police can generally detain you for a maximum of 24 hours. In serious cases (e.g., murder), this can be extended to 36–96 hours. For terrorism offences, detention can last up to 14 days without charge.
